People just need security. P.S. Jesus was just a philosopher.
I hate talking about religion, but when someone brings it up, I just have to ask:

Q. “How did we get here?”

A. “God created us.”

Q. “How do you know?”

A. “You just have to believe.”

Q. “How was God created?”

A. “We don’t know, you just have to believe.”

Q. “Why cant you just believe that we formed ourselves somehow?”

A. “God created us, you just have to believe.”

Q. “Why is it that we have to create something to believe in (God), instead of just believing that we somehow ended up here?”

A. “Because that’s preposterous (haha). There has to be a God, a heaven, and a hell because otherwise I won't know what will happen to me when I die. It will also be harder for me to let go of loved ones, because without a heaven I won't be able to meet up with them again eventually. Also, if there isn’t a hell then I’ve wasted my whole life being good when I could have had more fun. But don’t worry, you’ll never change my mind because just like all religious people, I’m as biased as politically correct extremists and Michael Moore combined.”

Q. “Why can’t you just be your own God and make decisions like the difference between right and wrong for yourself? I was just asking a question, I wasn't trying to change what you believe. P.S. Fuck people trying to press their beliefs on me, especially the cult of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Believe in God if you want, I just don’t like that the only argument for God being real is that ‘you just have to believe.’”

P.P.S. This conversation has actually happened to me a few times, with the exception of the last two comments. The last two comments were just how I think the conversation would go if people actually told the truth.. and if people actually said preposterous in normal conversations. Oh and "politically correct extremists" is just a term I used for the type of people that get mad when I say the word gay in any context. You can't reason with those people.

If you have a better argument, comment.

I just think that people have always wondered how they got here and what happens when they die. Then along the way someone threw in some morals and the fear of hell so that people would follow the rules. How could so many people be convinced that God is what created all of this? Easy, you just have to believe.

It can be argued that everything that you do and think required some sort of belief.

Even atheists have some sort of faith..their faith just isn't the religious type.

For instance, to believe that science is the highest law of the universe is to trust that our senses and equipment are giving us objective and correct views of the universe.

Theists generally need a God so that they believe they have some purpose..but atheists need to believe that there is no God because they want to believe that humans are capable of knowing all the answers.

The point is that we don't really know either way, and that everything in the end required some kind of reliance on faith. The only reasonable way to live your life is as an extreme skepticist. But of course, if we were skeptic about everything, we would never get anything done.

But don’t worry, you’ll never change my mind because just like all religious people, I’m as biased as politically correct extremists and Michael Moore combined.
Everyone is biased. In fact one could argue that the current trend in society of NOT being biased (and instead being apathetic) is just as terrible, because while one is sitting on the sideline debating if it is right to hold a point of view AT ALL, catastrophes could be occurring with no one's interference.

Also, if there isn’t a hell then I’ve wasted my whole life being good when I could have had more fun.
Blaine Pascal (and some other philosopher did as well...I think it was Kierkegaard) argued in his Pensees for a leap of reason. If you believe in God, and there IS a God, then you'll end up going to heaven. If you DON'T believe in God, and there is no God, then it won't matter all that much because odds are your life didn't have much of a purpose anyway. So it's either risk eternal damnation, or having a mediocre life. The least risky position would be to believe in God.

Why can’t you just be your own God and make decisions like the difference between right and wrong for yourself?
Because morals are subjective. Religions are part of an underlaying society, and they are used to maintain the rules and hierarchies of that society. If everyone was free to make up their own morals, you wouldn't be able to build any type of civilization.
